The challenge

The M5 is a key part of the motorway network, running between Birmingham and Exeter. As the main corridor into the South West, it becomes especially busy throughout the summer months carrying holiday traffic.

Routine inspections revealed serious deterioration to an embankment near Junction 8  in Worcestershire, affecting the verge, hard shoulder and Lane 1 of the southbound carriageway. Previous cracking had been routinely repaired, but had reappeared over time.

This led to an extensive programme of ground repair works, led by National Highways to restabilise the affected area, including a new retaining wall between the southbound M5 carriageway and the exit slip road at Strensham Interchange.

The solution

Comprehensive strengthening work saw Ivor King install two retaining walls, comprising a total of 316No. pairs of EZ26-700 profile steel sheet piles of up to 9.5 metres in length. The sheet piles have been installed to intercept any potential future deep-seated failures and support additional fill at the toe of the slope.

Working from the foot of the embankment, the ground was pre-augered to loosen soils, prior to installation of sheet piles , carried out using a Telescopic Leader Rig fitted with a vibratory hammer.

Whilst lane closures were necessary to support safe working, the carriageway and exit slip remained open to motorists throughout piling works, with all deliveries made using our own dedicated transport team and fleet of vehicles.

Ivor King’s installation of the sheet pile retaining wall allowed the ground level between the carriageway and slip road to be raised, and part of the existing slope to be replaced with a higher performance material to stabilise the embankment.

This major overhaul will decrease the need for routine repairs and ensure the road condition remains safe for years to come.
